Venice is one of those places people either fall in love with or write off as overcrowded and overpriced. The difference? How you do it. We’ve done Venice the wrong way before. This time, we did it properly. It completely changed the experience.
Where to Stay in Venice (That Isn’t San Marco)
The biggest mistake people make is staying in San Marco. Instead, base yourself in Sant’Elena or Castello. You’re still only a 15 to 20 minute walk from the main sights, but it feels quieter, more local, and significantly better value. You get the Venice people imagine. Not the one fighting for space.
The Smart Way to Get Around
Buy a vaporetto pass. Venice transport isn’t something to wing. The water buses become your metro, getting you to Murano, Lido, dinners, and back home late without stress. It’s one of those small decisions that make the whole trip smoother.
What’s Actually Worth It
Start your mornings early at St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, before the crowds build. Then leave. Venice is at its best when you step away from the obvious and wander into quieter neighbourhoods, canals, and backstreets.
The Beach Day Most People Miss
Yes, Venice has beaches. Head to Lido, just 20 minutes away by vaporetto. Think striped umbrellas, beach clubs, and long lunches by the sea. It breaks up the trip perfectly and gives you space to actually relax.
What to Skip (and What to Do Instead)
The €90 gondola ride isn’t essential. Instead, take a short gondola crossing (traghetto) for a few euros, or simply enjoy the views from the vaporetto routes. They’re just as scenic. Same feeling, far less spending.
The Best Aperitivo Spot
Al Timon is where you’ll get the Venice moment people imagine. Spritz in hand, sat by the canal, locals perched on boats, golden light on the water. It’s simple, but exactly right.
BOAB Take
Venice isn’t about ticking off landmarks. It’s about slowing down, walking more than you planned, and knowing where to spend and where not to. Do that, and Venice becomes one of the best cities in Europe.
